What does prenatal chiropractic care look like, and is it safe?
What is the Webster Technique?
Prenatal chiropractic is focused on the connection between the nervous system, spine and pelvis. Pregnancy is an incredible, transformative experience that also brings about drastic structural and hormonal changes. The body goes through rapid changes during pregnancy, the most obvious being a growing abdomen. When your center of gravity shifts to the front of your pelvis, this alters balance and posture. As your baby grows, the natural curvature of your low back increases, placing extra stress on the spinal structures. In order to compensate for these postural changes, the upper back and neck may also begin to shift, causing extra tension. When you pair drastic postural changes with relaxin (the pregnancy hormone that loosens ligaments and muscles), you are more susceptible to discomfort, falls and injuries. Chiropractic care addresses these concerns with safe, gentle care, so that you can experience your most comfortable pregnancy and optimal birth.
At Spruce Chiropractic, we are passionate about taking care of our pregnant patients and are specially trained in prenatal chiropractic care, holding Perinatal and Webster Technique Certifications with the International Pediatric Chiropractic Association (ICPA). The American Pregnancy Association also encourages prenatal chiropractic care and states that there are no direct contraindications to care. Prenatal chiropractic care is a safe and gentle approach to correcting and stabilizing the spine and pelvis, helping the body to function better, improving quality of life, and assisting in optimal birth outcomes.
In order to deliver a safe, comfortable adjustment, we utilize a special table and pillow to accommodate your growing abdomen. Prenatal chiropractic care involves sustained pressure, specific joint adjustments, and stretching. We will also utilize the Webster Technique.
The Webster Technique is a specific prenatal chiropractic analysis and adjustment. Pelvic misalignments may contribute to difficult labor (dystocia), caused by inadequate uterine function, pelvic contraction, and baby mal-position. The goal of this adjustment is to reduce the effects of pelvic joint dysfunction and allow more room within your uterus and pelvis to accommodate your growing baby.
This gentle technique aligns your pelvis and involves targeted muscle massage, soft tissue release, and uterine ligament stretches. The approach not only helps to decrease low back and pelvic pain, it is designed to create optimal room for your baby to shift into the optimal head-down position for labor and delivery.
HOW DOES CARE CHANGE AFTER MY BABY ARRIVES?
Congratulations: You did it! Labor, delivery, and postpartum contribute to so much physical, hormonal and emotional stress. The postpartum period is such a special time for recovery and adjusting to parenthood. Chiropractic care is a great tool to help your body recover and adapt to your new physical and emotional demands.
Even the most optimal birth can be tough on baby. Most parents also opt to get their baby checked in order to ensure the best start at life. Pediatric chiropractic care can help with things such as development, digestion, sleep, immune function, and breastfeeding.
You can utilize the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association website as an educational resource for more information on prenatal and pediatric chiropractic care.
